Learn More About the New NYC Cannabis Dispensary

As 2022 came to a close, New York City took its first brave steps to open a legal recreational marijuana dispensary. This launch comes a year after the state legalized marijuana for adults 21 and older, encouraging what is expected to be one of the country’s most profitable markets for cannabis yet.

The NYC cannabis dispensary opened its doors in the East Village thanks to the company Housing Works Cannabis Co., a non-profit organization actively known for combating homelessness and AIDs. The organization was the first among 36 groups or individuals New York awarded with a marijuana retail license. An additional 139 licenses have yet to be issued by the state Office of Cannabis Management and 900 applicants still eagerly await word on their submissions. Among the first round of licensees were Housing Works and eight other nonprofits.

One opening day—with a timely 4:20pm opening—the cannabis storefront was flooded with customers, including a line of hundreds snaking around the block. The storefront also abuts the sprawling urban campus of New York University, whose students could offer a ready supply of customers.

“Today marks a major milestone in our efforts to create the most equitable cannabis industry in the nation,” exclaimed New York City Mayor Eric Adams in a statement. “The opening of the first legal dispensary in our state right here in New York City is more than just a promising step for this budding industry—it represents a new chapter for those most harmed by the failed policies of the past.”

The Future of Cannabis in NYC

What’s in store for the cannabis industry in NYC? A lot it seems! After all, the industry is shaping up to be a significant part New York’s economic recovery, generating new jobs, building wealth in historically underserved communities, and increasing state and local tax revenue. In fact, New York is projected to generate $245 million in marijuana revenue annually by 2024, with NYC’s current administration planning to instate many more licenses to come in 2023 and beyond.
